What quality file do I need for each image size?

For best quality prints you should upload files that are of maximum size available to you.  While we can print larger than we recommend, the customer runs the risk of seeing lower than desired quality.  For example for an 8x10 we recommend at least a 2MP camera file, however we can do a print using a 1MP if the customer needs it.  Many factors impact the quality of the print, the detail in the original file may impact the final output.  An 8x10 of a portrait may look very good whereas an 8x10 of a 50 person group photo may not yield the desired results (the granularity/detail is lost in the canvas) even if the original file is from the same camera.  As a rule of thumb though:

Maximum Canvas
Size Possible

Camera Capacity
with settings at SHQ or SF Resolution

File Size

16"x20" - 22"x28" 3 MegaPixel Camera with resolution at 1536 x 2048 1.6 MB
20"x24" - 24"x30" 4 MegaPixel Camera with resolution at 1704 x 2272 2 MB
24"x30" - 30"x40" 5 MegaPixel Camera with resolution at 1944 x 2592 2.5 MB

Most digital cameras allow you to change the resolution, so you can select the quality of your photos as you take them. We highly recommend that you use the SHQ (Super High Quality) or Super Fine mode on your camera using TIF or JPEG settings (using minimum compression).

Remember: No matter what size the file is, if the picture is blurry as a small print, it will be blurry enlarged on the canvas.

How do I get the digital file to you?

We can take the digital file via CD, DVD, email, USB drive or any camera memory stick. Digital by Southern Moulding is not responsible for damage to the media and/or file so customers should not send in their only copy.

You can send it in any of three ways:

  • Send it in with our driver (he can sign for the media when he does a normal delivery)

  • Send it in via US Mail to:

Southern Moulding & Supply Co.
ATTN-Digital Picture Department
7040 Battle Drive
Kennesaw, GA 30152

Is this canvas print going to last?

The print is printed on archival canvas and designed to last 100+ years.  Non laminated prints are water resistant (lamination is required to make them water proof).  However like most artwork they are at the mercy of the elements and it is suggested that the shop should recommend UV protection and acid free mounting if the customer wants the quality to be preserved over time.  We offer acid free mounting and UV lamination services.
