Insite® BIODEGRADABLE
|
Standard, paper-faced BIODEGRADABLE foamboard with
SFI certified paper liners.
|
|
DESCRIPTION:
Standard, paper-faced memory
foamboard with Gilman's BIODEGRADABLE rigid foam center and
SFI certified paper liners. There is no trade-off between
the positive environmental attributes of Insite®
BIODEGRADABLE and its physical performance. With the
exception of it's biodegradable properties, Insite®
BIODEGRADABLE performs the same as Insite® Reveal® foamboard.
|
BIODEGRADABLE Polystyrene Foam Center:
Rigid foamboard breaks
down in landfills or composting environments in 1 to 5
years. Formulated with not less than 15% recycled content.
The breakdown of the BIODEGRADABLE foamboard will not begin
until the board is discarded.
|
LINERS:
Insite® Biodegradable is faced with
smooth, bright white paper liners formulated from wood
products certified by the
Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI), the largest
forestry products certification program in North America.
|
TESTING/CERTIFICATION:
The biodegradation
properties of material samples used in the manufacture of
Insite® and Duraplast® BIODEGRADABLE foamboard were tested
by an independent laboratory using standard ASTM methods, as
well as other established tests.

THE BIODEGRADABLE POLYSTYRENE CENTER
Gilman’s BIODEGRADABLE foam center, with 15% recycled content,
is formulated with “bio resins”. These bio resins cause the
discarded foamboard to degrade in landfills or commercial
composters once the foam is exposed to a bacteria-rich
environment. These bio resins actually transform the structure
of the polystyrene, while attracting microorganisms that
metabolize and neutralize the plastic. Only an biomass compost
remains after decomposition. This material is safe for the
environment. Our exclusive polystyrene center requires one to
five years for 100% breakdown, whereas conventional foamboards
will not biodegrade for 80 to 450 years.
Is there a "green trade-off" in terms of performance? No way. On
the job, Gilman's biodegradable products are virtually identical
to those built on our industry-standard Reveal® foam center. The
difference is, BIODEGRADABLE foam boards return to nature when
their working life is over.
THE BREAKDOWN OF THE BIODGRADABLE FOAMBOARD WILL NOT BEGIN UNTIL
IT IS DISCARDED IN A LANDFILL OR SIMILAR SOLID WASTE FACILITY. |
SUSTAINABLE FOREST
INITIATIVE
INSITE® BIODEGRADABLE is faced with bright white
paper liners manufacturered with wood products sourced from the
Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI).
Forest Certification is a market-based, non-regulatory forest
conservation tool designed to recognize and promote
environmentally responsible forestry and sustainability of
forest resources. The forest certification process involves an
evaluation of land management planning and forestry practices by
a third-party according to an agreed-upon set of standards.
Certification standards address social and economic welfare as
well as environmental protection.
Headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, SFI is an independent
organization that sets North American-based standards for forest
management. Endorsed by PEFC for global recognition of
acceptable standards, it includes 135 million acres in North
America and is the largest certification program in U.S. and
Canada. With 212 participants, the program accounts for over 1.2
million acres re-forested in 2006 and over $880 million
investment by participants in sustainable forestry research
since program began in 1995. |

CERTIFICATION
OF BIODEGRADABILITY
The foam center of The Gilman Brothers Company
BIODEGRADABLE products is formulated with bio resins that cause
the polystyrene foam to break down when disposed of in a
commercial solid waste treatment facility. The bio resins
transform the structure of the polystyrene, which attracts
microorganisms that metabolize and neutralize the plastic. The
resulting residue is an inert biomass that is safe for the
environment. Depending on disposal conditions, this process
requires from 1 to 5 years.TESTING
METHODS: The biodegradation properties of material samples used
in the manufacture of Insite® and Duraplast® BIODEGRADABLE
Foamboard were tested using ASTM D5338.98, “Standard Test Method
for Determining the Aerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials
under Controlled Composting Conditions”, which is equivalent to
the ISO 14855 method, “Evaluation of the Ultimate Aerobic
Biodegradability and Disintegration of Plastics under Controlled
Composting Conditions”; ASTM5511, “Standard Test Method for
Determining the Anaerobic Biodegradation of Plastic Materials
under High-Solids Anaerobic Digestion Conditions”; and ASTM
D5209-91 “Standard Test Method for Determining the Aerobic
Biodegradation of Plastic Materials in the Presence of Municipal
Sewage”. |
